We all know that nursery rhymes are very entertaining for young children, in fact young children often go around repeating these rhymes over and over again; they never seem to grow tired of them. But the thing is that nursery rhymes can also be very entertaining for older children. The trick to keeping nursery rhymes entertaining for children of all ages is to come up with some entertaining nursery rhyme activities.
Here are some ideas for entertaining nursery rhyme activities.
My Mother Goose Book:
Materials needed:
•Paper
•Copy of nursery rhyme words
•Crayons
Directions:
This book is something that is an ongoing activity; you can do it throughout the entire school year or you can do it for a few months. When you introduce a new nursery rhyme you are going to need to update the book.
•Make sure that you have the words printed on either the top half or bottom half of a piece of paper.
•Hand out the words to the nursery rhyme each time you introduce a new nursery rhyme.
•Have the children draw a picture of the nursery rhyme or what they think is going on in the nursery rhyme.
•Punch holes in the paper and add it to the children’s collection. You can also laminate the pages so that the book lasts longer
Painting Pies:
Materials needed:
•Paper plates
•Aluminum pie tins
•White flour
•Wheat flour
•Ground cloves
•Nutmeg or ginger
•Cinnamon
•Water
•Measuring cups and spoons
Directions:
•First read the nursery rhyme “Simple Simon” to make the kids familiar with it and explain to them that you are going to be making your own pies.
•Next you are going to want to give each child four paper plates.
•Have them separate the paper plates into two piles with two plates each
•Now have them turn one set of paper plates upside down on top of the other paper plates and staple the plates together
•Now you are going to want to make your pie paint. To do this you need to follow the recipe: Mix together 1 cup white flour, 1 cup wheat flour, ¼ teaspoon ground cloves, ¼ teaspoon ginger or nutmeg, 2 teaspoons cinnamon and 2 cups water. Make sure that you mix these together well. This recipe will paint 10 to 12 pies so make as many batches as needed.
•Now have each child paint a pie crust on the top half of their pie
•Allow it to dry for at least 24 hours and then place the paper plate pie into the aluminum pie tin
Muffet’s Dancing Spider:
Materials needed:
•Paper
•Pipe cleaners
•Googly eyes
•Glue or tape
•Yarn
Directions:
•First you are going to want to cut out a black circle and an orange circle that are the same size
•Next you want to cut out a smaller black circle.
•Now you want to glue the smaller black circle to the top of the orange circle
•Glue your wiggle eyes onto the small black circle
•Glue or tape the pipe cleaners onto the orange circle making sure that they are spaced evenly. You want the spider to have eight legs, take four pipe cleaners and cut them in half for eight legs
•Glue or staple the bigger black circle on top of the pipe cleaners and on top of the orange circle.
•Bend the pipe cleaners at knee and up on the end so the spider stands on the table
•Now attach a piece of yarn to the black circle in two different spots
•Move the yarn to make the spider dance around
